Tip 10: Safely Transporting Your Pottery

Once you've arranged for your pottery to be fired locally, the next challenge is ensuring its safe transport to the kiln.

This might seem straightforward, but unfired clay in its bone-dry state is incredibly delicate. Prior to firing, pottery lacks structural integrity, making it susceptible to cracks and breaks from even minor bumps during transportation. Certain features like handles, mug lips, and pouring spouts are especially prone to damage.

Additionally, bisque-fired pottery with applied glaze, yet to undergo the final glaze firing, is similarly delicate. While the bisque ware itself is less likely to break, the unfired glaze layer is vulnerable to crumbling and rubbing off. It's essential to carefully package unfired glazed ware to prevent any damage to the glaze during transit.
